Incredible 1870s Ornate Chair w/ Unique Upholstery, by George Hunzinger

This absolutely fantastic late Victorian chair is a rare gem, made by the iconic German-American designer, George Hunzinger. Coming from a long line of cabinetmakers, Hunzinger wanted to bring something innovative and new to the American market, and patented a number of unique designs both in style and function. One of his signature details is the front leg construction, as seen in this chair - it forms both the frame and the leg in one continuous diagonal line. Also exemplified here is the finely detailed lathe work, adding intricacy and interest to walnut wood. Interestingly, there are also some Eastlake elements, as seen in the carved crossed lines and sunburst designs. While the upholstery is not original, it is some of the most impressive we've ever seen; each pleat in the seat is individually formed with it's own padding, and ruching around the outer edge would have been entirely hand-sewn. This rosy pink cotton velvet has been freshly cleaned, and is in excellent antique condition. The wood has been oiled and also maintains a fine condition, with only minor wear. Truly a fabulous showpiece, and a must have for any collector of Victorian or fine antique pieces. $1195
