Rare & Amazing All Metal Vanity by Norman Bel Geddes
This ultra rare vanity was made by iconic American designer Norman Bel Geddes, circa 1930. Bel Geddes was commissioned by Simmons Manufacturing (yes, the maker of the BeautyRest mattress!) to create a line of bedroom furniture. which soon became Simmons best selling line. Emanating work from the Bauhaus and De Stijl movements, he used enamelled steel for his creations with both curved and straight lines, essentially birthing a new style which would be described as "streamline", "art moderne," and "machine age".
This vanity retains its original black and silver enamel, with a few touch ups to the top surfaces and a clear coat overall. We've chosen to leave most of the signs of age as wel feel this contributes to the history of this nearly 100-year-old piece. All parts have been thoroughly cleaned, and new merlot leather and foam installed on the vanity seat. Chips in the mirror and painted glass have been repaired rather than replaced to maintain authenticity. This piece could also work well in an entryway as the mirror is full length, and the stool the ideal height for putting on shoes. A rare find and an important part of furniture design history. 50"W x 17.5"D x 23.5"H (at drawer pedestals), overall height with mirror is 69", stool is 23"W x 14.5"D x 17"H, $1295
