Charming Victorian "Duchess" Demilune Dressing Table w/ Eastlake Details

  • $495.00

This gorgeous late Victorian piece is a "Duchess" or dressing table, used by a fine lady in the late 1800s to put the finishing touches on her outfit. Today, its compact size would make an excellent entryway table, hall table, or go right back to the Victorian era and use it as intended in a bedroom! This particular Duchess table is a bit unusual, in that it has three legs (most had four) and lovely Eastlake design details (noted on the mirror supports).

***An aside: Eastlake design was first presented in a book, written by the rather stodgy Charles Eastlake in 1868. In it he rejected the traditional curvy and ornate style of the era, and advocated for a new look with cleaner lines and geometric shapes. He was not a cabinet builder, but he did seem to enjoy criticizing the work of actual cabinet makers who adapted his designs. Regardless, we have his work to thank for the Aesthetic Movement of the late 1800s.

Made of mahogany and beautifully built with attention to design and function, this piece is in very nice condition considering its age of around 150 years. We have cleaned and treated the wood, and stabilized any loose parts, and now it is ready to serve a new home. Plenty of patina on this lovely piece, and the foxing in the mirror is just perfectly aged. 36"W x 17"D (at centre) x 53"H overall, 27.5"H to top of table, $495
