Rare Russel Spanner "Catalina" Sideboard, Iconic Canadian Mid Century Design
An incredible piece of Canadian design history, this is the "Catalina" sideboard by designer Russell Spanner for his company, Ruspan Designs. Refinished top to bottom, we've maintained the two-tone look of the original finish. Quality built with all hardwood construction, and finished with elm (darker wood) and birch (lighter wood).
Spanner created his own line as a counter balance to his fathers' existing furniture company, which produced much more traditional pieces. Spanner wanted to create a more clean-lined, modernist look, appealing to the emerging mid century modern aesthetic. His pieces were wildly successful, for being both practical and beautifully designed. As an amateur wrestler, Spanner was even known to literally toss his creations around the workshop to test their durability. Sadly, his career was short-lived and the company closed in 1963.
This sideboard exhibits stunning grain patterns in the top and sides, and a wonderfully angular, aviation-inspired design with tapered and splayed legs and slanted profile. Lots of storage is offered in the three roomy drawers and sliding door cabinet with removable shelf. This is the only Ruspan sideboard we've had in our 11 years, and it's likely the only one we'll ever get! 60"L x 20"D x 32.25"H, $1895
