Incredible Rare Dining Set by American Design Icon, Paul Frankl for Brown Saltman
An incredibly rare and beautiful set, this exceptional collection was designed by Austrian-American Paul Frankl for Brown Saltman in 1941. Frankl's contributions to the modernism movement in furniture cannot be understated; he literally invented art moderne, with his self-proclaimed "skyscraper" style. Revered by his peers and celebrities alike (his furniture was purchased by Katherine Hepburn, Alfred Hitchcock, and countless other stars), he was at the height of his career when he collaborated with Brown Saltman of California.
In 1941, Frankl developed several lines for Brown Saltman, including this one. Using unique materials, such as the "combed" wood on the table pedestals seen in this set, Frankl reinvented himself yet again. Fusing influences from his skyscraper style, Asian design, and art deco, he essentially created art moderne. This dining table, six chairs, and console table are a fine example of art moderne at its best, and we are thrilled to have them in our shop.
The dining table top (and two leaves), chairs, and console table top have all been professionally repainted in their original black satin finish. Reupholstered with new foam and a luxurious twilight blue velvety fabric, the chair seats contrast and compliment the black frames beautifully. The combed wood on the pedestals (possibly cedar?) has been cleaned and oiled and shows a rich patina, as does the refinished mahogany shelf on the console table. The set includes four armless chairs and two armchairs, as well as two extension leaves.
This is indeed, functional art. The footprint of this set is not huge, but not small either; it's ideal for intimate entertaining while still having room for dishes, candles, etc. The console makes the perfect side table for barware and spirits, and the updated seats ensure comfortable dining. This set could accommodate a full size holiday dinner, or a cozy evening of charcuterie amongst friends. It is timeless, yet unique, and historically significant in the evolution of furniture design in the 20th century.
Dining table is 66"L x 42"W x 29"H, each leaf adds 10" for a total possible length of 86", console table is 53.75"L x 18"D x 29"H. $5495 / set
***We recommend employing a padded or flannel-backed table covering when using the dining table to protect the integrity of the freshly painted top. The new fabric on the chairs is rated to a high durability and can be spot cleaned if needed. We recommend yearly oiling of the combed wood pedestals. Tables can be disassembled for easier transport.
